Do Women Have More Vision Problems Than Men?

DID YOU KNOW THAT 2/3 of people with eye problems are women? April is Women’s Eye Health And Safety Month, so let’s take a moment to highlight women’s eye health concerns.

Why would there be an imbalance? Here are a few theories:

  1. On average, women live longer and many eye problems are age-related.
  2. Some eye conditions (such as dry eye syndrome) are simply more common in women, young or old.
  3. Social and economic factors affect women’s access to eye care, especially in developing countries.

What Can Be Done About It?

  • Don’t smoke. Smoking causes many eye health problems.
  • Schedule regular eye exams to catch problems early.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Some Tips For Dealing With Dry Eye

Dry eye is a condition that can show up as blurred vision, teariness, a gritty feeling in your eyes, or frequently itchy eyes. The eye’s liquids help keep the eye clean and healthy, so dry eye can contribute to a lot of vision problems. If you’re experiencing these problems, here are some tips:

  • If you wear contact lenses, visit with us. A different option may help keep your eyes more comfortable.
  • Consider the side effects of your medications. If you suspect there’s a problem, talk to your doctor.
  • Hydrate! Drink plenty of water to keep your body balanced.
  • Consider a humidifier, particularly for your bedroom.
  • Take moments throughout the day to rest your eyes.
  • Get enough sleep.

Pregnancy’s Effects On Eyesight

Pregnancy can affect your eyesight. Most changes are temporary and minor, including dry eye syndrome. If you’re experiencing blurred vision or a change in the way your contacts fit, come in and visit with us.

However, if you experience flashes of light, double vision, or vision loss—especially during the third trimester—let your caregiver know, or call us. It could be an indication of a more serious condition.
