3 Things That May Be Causing Your Red Eyes
Our eyes are sensitive to the environment around us. And although it’s typically not dangerous when our eyes are occasionally red, something is irritating them.
#1: It May Be Allergies
Eye redness is a common sign of an allergic reaction. Our bodies react to foreign substances such as pollen, pet hair/dander, or dust by releasing a histamine. This histamine expands blood vessels in our eyes, which makes them red.
#2: It May Be Your Contact Lenses
Contact lenses are one of the red-eye primary culprits. First, if contacts are not properly cleaned every day, they can develop a buildup of microbes and other deposits that can irritate the surface of your eye. Second, contacts reduce the amount of oxygen that reaches your eyes. They also reduce tear production which may cause your eyes to dry out. If you get red eyes after wearing contacts, talk to us. We can help you find contacts that work better for you.
#3: It May Be Fatigue
Puffy eyes, dark circles, and red eyes are signs that you may just need to get more sleep! Lack of sleep can cause red eyes and make them itch.
Helping Your Red Eyes
First, try these simple steps:
- Use over-the-counter eye drops to relieve redness.
- Wash face and hands frequently.
- Make sure you’re getting enough sleep.
- Seasonal allergies may warrant a visit with an allergist.
- Wear your contact lenses less. See if wearing your glasses helps clear up the problem.
- Check your routine for allergens, including cleaning products, your makeup, the foods you’re consuming, Rufus (or perhaps Rufus’ buddies who have been hanging around), etc.
